Introduction to Bobsleigh or Bob Skeleton |
|
| You can have the opportunity to train with the champions and gain in confidence, strength, teamwork and courage. This could be the first step to doing the real thing! We run a similar event in Norway! What is Bobsleigh? The team (normally four people for this activity) pushes the sleigh and boards and the brakeman jumps in 50 to 60m from the start point. Speed is crucial at this first stage and many top track sprinters make the transition from Athletics to Bobsleigh. Once in the crew members keep their heads down, forming a compact surface with minimum drag. What is Bob Skeleton? The athlete adopts a face down, head first, minimal drag riding position on board a sleek sled. From a stand still at the track top, the athlete sprints over 20 to 30 metres, accelerating the sled before diving aboard. The athlete continues to accelerate under gravity, aiming to adopt the most energy efficient line possible while negotiating approximately fifteen curves. The aim simply is the fastest possible descent of the track, racing against the clock to within 1/100th of a second. On the day. The high performance coaches will guide you through the skills and strategies required for the ‘Formula One' of ice sports to make your experience exhilarating, fun, and safe. The session starts with a short video to get you into the mood. Then its to the track for a thorough safety briefing. Once your are kitted out with the correct safety gear, it out to the track to learn the sport and techniques used. You will have a trial run on the 'start facility' built for athletes to train for the Salt Lake City Olympics. The start facility is a true replica and although it is not on ice, you can achieve speeds of up to 40 mph (total track length is approximately 60m - this is not a full length track and there will be up to 3 other participants in the bobsleigh with you). You will have a chance to get another quick practice in before being put to the test on the timed runs. When can you go? Available on selected dates, all year round (subject to availability). Duration The activity will last approximately 2 to 3 hours. Key information To participate in this activity you must be at least 15 years old. General fitness is required.
